PE and customary landowners on Waigeo Island in the fabled Raja Ampat archipelago of eastern Indonesia proudly announced that, as of January 1, 2009, they have entered into an ambitious and innovative five-year pilot agreement to preserve for future generations, the entire Orobiai River catchment in Waigeo's eastern half: 92 square kilometers of virtually untouched primary forest, set in visually stunning topography, and teeming with spectacular yet globally threatened wildlife.

Vogelkop Bowerbird
comes to ‘Life’

Cameraman Barrie Britton spent nearly 200 hours sequestrated in hides in order to obtain the ultimate dream-sequence of courting and mating vogelkop bowerbirds, not surprisingly a world first!

During the period September 3 to October 8, 2008 PE assisted a production team of the acclaimed BBC Natural History Unit (Bristol, UK) in order to film the remarkable Vogelkop Bowerbird Amblyornis inornatus up-close and personal in a remote region of the Arfak Mountains on the Bird’s Head Peninsula. Meet the little wonder that cameraman Barrie Britton daily zoomed into through his viewfinder, often in total amazement.

Endangered brush-turkey photographed

Who could have imagined that the adult male Bruijn's Brush-turkey Aepypodius bruijnii in display condition looks like this when staring at the drab plate in Beehler's 1986 field guide to the birds of New Guinea? Copyright © Papua Expeditions/cv.Ekonexion and C. Davies

From March 18 till April 9, 2007 PE resident birders Iwein Mauro and Zeth Wonggor guided British bird watcher Charles Davies on an exploratory bird tour to Mount Danai on Waigeo Island, and comfortably sat him down in a hide located just four meters away from an active nest mound of Bruijn's Brush-turkey Aepypodius bruijnii. The mound-tending male and a soliciting female performed, and the group was in the fortunate opportunity to secure the first photographs in the wild of this nearly mythical species, which was only first tracked down in the field as recently as 2002 by Mauro on Mount Nok.
