Archbold's Nightjar Eurostopodus archboldi was only first discovered on Mount Tafa in Papua New Guinea during the 1933-1934 Papuan Expedition of the American Museum of Natural History, which was sponsored and led by Richard Archbold after whom the species was eventually named. Despite extensive historical collecting efforts in the Arfak Mountains it was only first recorded there in 1994.

Amazing Arfak

Mountain Owlet-Nightjar Aegotheles albertisi, as most members of the Aegothelid family, responds rather unpredictably to broadcasting of pre-recorded vocalizations and often proves more easily tracked-down on its day-time roost, usually in dense thickets.

April 4 > 15, 2010

12 days/11 nights, from US$ 1,447
This birding expedition focuses exclusively on the isolated and rugged Arfak Mountains in the eastern sector of the Bird's Head peninsula near the provincial capital Manokwari. Bound to become the premier birding destination in Papua, the Arfaks support all presently described Vogelkop endemics and provide straightforward access to largely untouched foothill, hill and montane forests that support a wonderfully diverse avifauna. Join us now on this Arfak bird watching adventure of a lifetime, covering all relevant elevations on a single integrated trek into the wild interior.

May 9 > 29, 2010
September 5 > 25, 2010

21 days/20 nights, from US$ 4,574
This three week’s bird watching adventure essentially is a condensed version of our ‘Best of Papua’ birding expedition, scouring off the roughest edges and focusing especially on birds of paradise. We thus visit only easily accessible birding sites that require minimal hiking effort: the Lake Habbema alpine plateau in the Snow Mountains above Wamena, lowland forest near Jayapura, the Siyoubrig area of the Arfak Mountains, and tantalizing Waigeo. When combined with our 'Oceanic Papua' pre-tour extension, this expedition provides opportunities for seeing more Papua endemics than any other bird tour advertized on the web today.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Best of Papua

Many birds of paradise to a certain degree are tolerant to forest degradation and habitat modification but the Superb Bird of Paradise Lophorina superba even persists in small open stands of planted casuarina groves in the densely populated and heavily cultivated Balim Valley of the Snow Mountains.

June 13 > July 11, 2010
July 25 > August 22, 2010

29 days/28 nights, from US$ 5,748
This bird watching expedition combines Papua's finest and most complementary hotspots in terms of species endemism and total diversity: Biak Island, Lake Habbema and the Ibele Valley in the Snow Mountains of Wamena, lowland forest near Jayapura, the Siyoubrig area of the Arfak Mountains, and tantalizing Waigeo. If you only come birding in Papua once, then take this tour!

Waigeo, Arfak and Geelvink Islands

Rufous-sided Honeyeater Ptiloprora erythropleura is one of 42 bird species that are entirely confined to Papua or Indonesian New Guinea.

October 10 > November 3, 2010

25 days/24 nights, from US$ 3,946
We begin our Papuan birding adventure with a pilgrimage to Waigeo’s avian delights in the Orobiai River catchment. Then follows a relaxed day’s birding our local patches around Sorong. Next, we shift our attention to the Arfak Mountains, where we shall bird all relevant elevations during a single integrated trek into the remote interior. The last leg of our birding expedition, we devote to the deep water islands of Biak and Numfor in Papua's famed Geelvink Bay. The ultimate Vogelkop and Geelvink birding trip!
