Archbold's Nightjar Eurostopodus archboldi was only first discovered on Mount Tafa in Papua New Guinea during the 1933-1934 Papuan Expedition of the American Museum of Natural History, which was sponsored and led by Richard Archbold after whom the species was eventually named. Despite extensive historical collecting efforts in the Arfak Mountains it was only first recorded there in 1994.

Amazing Arfak

Mountain Owlet-Nightjar Aegotheles albertisi, as most members of the Aegothelid family, responds rather unpredictably to broadcasting of pre-recorded vocalizations and often proves more easily tracked-down on its day-time roost, usually in dense thickets.

This three week’s bird watching adventure essentially is a condensed version of our ‘Best of Papua’ birding expedition, scouring off the roughest edges and focusing especially on birds of paradise. We thus visit only easily accessible birding sites that require minimal hiking effort: the Lake Habbema alpine plateau in the Snow Mountains above Wamena, lowland forest near Jayapura, the Siyoubrig area of the Arfak Mountains, and tantalizing Waigeo.
